Joan Shaw Hulse

Formerly of Cornwall

Joan Shaw Hulse, a former longtime resident of Cornwall, entered into eternal rest on May 22 at Montgomery Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, in Montgomery. She was 90 years old.

The daughter of the late Harold Woodruff and Laura (Hasbrouck) Woodruff, Joan was born on Sept. 17, 1928 in Newburgh.

Joan was retired after working as a bookkeeper for Hey’s Appliances in Cornwall for many years. She was an active member of St John’s Episcopal Church of Cornwall, and served for a long time on the Vestry and Altar Guilds.

“Joan was a resident and member of the Cornwall community for 70 years. She will be missed greatly,” her family said.

In addition to her parents, Joan was predeceased by her loving husband, Harold F. Hulse, in 2008. Joan is survived by her son: Brian H. Hulse of Bridgeport, Conn.; her daughter: Janith Thompson of Mount Holly, N.C.; four grandchildren: Kevin, Kelly, Colleen and Kyle Thompson; and seven great grandchildren.

A funeral service and inurnment will take place on Saturday, June 8 at 4:30 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church Columbarium, 66 Clinton Street, Cornwall.

Helen Catherine (Preiss) Murphy

January 31, 1911-May 27, 2019

Helen Catherine (Preiss) Murphy, of Cornwall, entered into eternal rest on May 27 at her residence. She was 108.

The daughter of the late Francis Preiss and Emma (Hahn) Preiss, she was born in Brooklyn,. on January 31, 1911.

While working as an Executive Secretary with Texaco/Chevron in Long Island City, Helen lived in Queens. After retiring she moved to Hallandale, Fla., subsequently moving to Ocala, Fla., before coming to Cornwall.

In her earlier days Helen was an avid bowler and golfer. She was an exceptional bridge player and particularly enjoyed playing duplicate bridge at the Powelton Club in Newburgh. She was also a long time member of The Catholic Daughters of America.

Helen is survived by two sons: Kenneth G. Cook of Cornwall and Ronald W. Cook of New York City. She was blessed with 6 loving grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter Barbara Cook and a Grandson Kenneth G. Cook, Jr.

Visitation was held on Thursday, May 30 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Quigley-Sullivan Funeral Home, Inc., 337 Hudson Street, Cornwall-on Hudson, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 31 at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church, 340 Hudson Street, Cornwall-On-Hudson. Interment will follow the Mass at St. Charles Cemetery, Pinelawn, N.Y.

Judith A. Reggio

July 21, 1943-May 27, 2019

Cornwall

Judith A. Reggio, a 38 year resident of Cornwall, passed away with her children at her side at St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital on May 27. She was 75 years old.

She was born in the Bronx on July 21, 1943 to Frank and Mary Koge and grew up in the Parkchester neighborhood of the Bronx. It was there that she met and married her husband Richard. She and Rich shared all the joys and sorrows of 39 years together and raised their family with love. She was a fiercely independent and strong woman with a fantastic sense of humor, an infectious laugh, a keen mind for conversation, and who cared for her family with unequaled love and generosity. Her most prized possession was a happy and strong family and she will be missed with unimaginable measure by everyone who knew her.

She is predeceased by her parents, brother William and beloved husband Richard. Survivors include her daughter, Catherine Reggio Ceriello (Shea); sons Christopher (Lauren) and Stephen (Christie) Reggio; and her grandchildren who brought her endless joy: Logan, Matthew, and Brett Reggio; Tristan, Caden and Luca Ceriello; and Mitchell and Brooks Reggio. She loved them more than they will ever know.

Friends may call at Brooks Funeral Home, 621 Gidney Avenue in Newburgh on Sunday, June 2, from 2 to 5 p.m. A funeral mass will be held Monday, June 3 at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 301 Ann Street in Newburgh.
