Here’s a brief quiz for you. (1) Where is Cornwall’s Wall of Fame? (2) How many people does it include? (3) When is the next time you can nominate someone? (4) Where can you get nomination forms and (5) Who should be nominated?
We can help you with most of the answers. (1) We actually have two Walls of Fame. There’s one near the high school auditorium and another in the Cornwall Public Library. Both sites include plaques with the name of the inductee and the reason for their selection.
(2) This could be considered a trick question. Six people were inducted in 2016. But in the 90s about a dozen people were included on a Wall of Distinguished Alumni.
(3) As you may have suspected, you can submit your nominations now. The deadline is March 1. (4) Nomination forms are available at www.cornwallschools.com. You can also get one from the district’s Facebook page, from any school in the district or from this edition of The Cornwall Local (see page 10).
(5) “Who should be nominated?” is up to you, But we can help you with the criteria for the selection. A candidate can be:
-A distinguished alumnus
-A resident who has served the community in a remarkable way, or
-A nonresident who has had a profound effect on the Cornwall community.
The person you nominate does not have to be someone who is still living. The 2016 inductees were
-Gen. David Petraeus (a 1970 Cornwall graduate)
-Jeanne Schaeffer Theis (a former Cornwall teacher, coach and principal)
-Chic Sciple Cooper (a former Cornwall teacher, volunteer and columnist)
-Dr. David and Mrs. Dolce Dorfman (community service leaders)
-Kim Quimby (founder of a chapter of Girls on the Run)
After the nominations are submitted, a panel will select this year’s inductees. Participating should be fun. As citizens, we can cast our ballots in the general election in November and in the school vote in May. But it’s not often that we can have input on who the candidates should be.
The Wall of Fame selection gives us that opportunity — no matter how well we did on the quiz.
