Charlie Edward Brown

December 10, 1941-May 7, 2018

Newburgh

Charlie Edward Brown of Newburgh entered into rest on Monday, May 7.

The son of the late Charles and Grace Barnes Brown, he was born on December 10, 1941 in Cornwall.

Charlie was a successful Prudential Insurance Sales Manager and was recognized with numerous awards and promotions.  He was a talented photographer and a past member of the Newburgh Camera Club.  After retiring from Prudential he had a successful wedding photography business. His hobbies were fine woodworking, golfing, cooking and riding his Harley Davidson.

Survivors include his loving wife of 55 years, Sandra Ochsen Brown; son Eric Brown and his wife Angela of Plattekill; daughter Kelly Langston and her husband David of  Plattekill; grandchildren: Hailee Grace, Meridith Kate, Zachary Charles, Mia Juliet, Olivia Sierra, Andrea Betty and Claire Sandra.

He was predeceased by his sister, Joyce Retta, his brother Barry Brown, and his grandson Eric David Langston.

His family received visitors on Thursday, May 10 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at James F. Lulves Funeral Home, 9 Ave A, Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, May 11 at 1:30 p.m. at Our Lady of the Lake Chapel, 433 S. Plank Rd., Newburgh. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Charlie’s memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or to The Cerebral Palsy Association.

Virginia Cahill

April 15, 1931-April 27, 2018

Ocala, Fla.

Virginia (Ginny) Florene Cahill, age 87, died peacefully on April 27, at Munroe Regional Medical Center in Ocala, Fla, after a prolonged illness.

Virginia was born April 15, 1931 in Cornwall, the daughter of James S. Gazaway and Marie Theresa Anthes.

Ginny graduated from Highland Falls High School in 1948, then began working as a dispatcher for Bear Mountain State Park.  In 1955 she married Michael F. Cahill and began raising a family.  Ginny and Mike moved to Dunnellon, Fla. in 1978, fulfilling a life dream of living in Florida, and where they lived for the rest of their lives.  He preceded her in death on February 5, 1998.  They were married for 43 years.

Ginny is survived by her three children and their spouses; James (Holly) Cahill, Dadeville, Ala., Kathleen (Dave) Staub, Rochester, NY, Mary Sharon (Jose) Betancourt, San Antonio, Tex.; ten grandchildren and one great-grandson; two sisters, Georgia (Jimmy) Wallace, Fort Montgomery, and Barbara Bott, Highland Falls.

Burial will be in the Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, FL, with committal services on Monday, May 8

Martin Andrew Grant

October 27, 1967-April 30, 2018

Cornwall

Martin Andrew Grant, of Cornwall, died suddenly and unexpectedly of cardiac arrest on April 30 at St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh. He was 50 years old.

Martin was born in Syracuse on October 27, 1967.  He was the son of the late Dr. Martin B. Grant and is survived by his mother Joanne Smith Grant and his beloved sister Jennifer Grant.

Martin was a graduate of Bishop Dunn Memorial School in Newburgh and Cornwall Central High School.  He was a graduate of the Gemological Institute of America in New York receiving a Gemologist Diploma in Diamonds and Diamond Grading.  He owned and operated Alley Jewelers in Cornwall-on-Hudson and Gold Betta Antiques Ltd. at the Place des Antiquaires in New York City.

In addition to his mother and sister, Martin is survived by his uncles: Martin Smith (Marianne), Owen Smith (Charlene), and Fred Grant; as well as many cherished cousins who were confidantes and friends.  In addition to his father, Martin was predeceased by his much missed uncles: Gary Smith (Kathy) and Douglas Smith.

Martin was charming, funny, loving, a sales person extraordinaire and very complicated.  He will be sadly missed by family and friends.

Visitation was held. on Friday, May 4 at Quigley Bros. Funeral Home in Cornwall-on-Hudson,. A graveside service was held on May 5 at St. Thomas Cemetery in Cornwall.

Melvin B. Johnson

June 19, 1948-May 2, 2018

Cornwall

Melvin B. Johnson, Jr., a lifelong resident of Cornwall and Cornwall-on-Hudson, entered into rest on Wednesday, May 2.  He was 69.

The son of the late Melvin B. Sr. and Emily Otto Johnson, he was born on June 19, 1948 in Cornwall.

Melvin graduated from Cornwall Central High School and OCCC.  He served in the US Air Force. Melvin worked at the Joffrey Ballet in New York City and loved donating his time to help with local ballet company productions. He was a member of the Storm King Dinner Theater as well as a lifetime member of the Museum of the Hudson Highlands.  Melvin was Assistant Curator for Washington’s Headquarters for many years. He loved American History, and participated in many Civil War re-enactments.

Survivors include his sister Betsy Cantley and her husband Tim, plus many cousins.

Services will be held on Friday, May 11 at 11:00am at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 66 Clinton St., Cornwall, NY.  Inurnment will follow in the church columbarium.

Maureen A. Terwilliger

August 23, 1961-May 4, 2018

Cornwall-on-Hudson

Maureen A. Terwilliger of Cornwall-on-Hudson entered into eternal rest surrounded by her loving family on May 4 at home. She was 56.

The daughter of Ursula A. Slattery, Maureen was born on August 23, 1961 in West Islip, N.Y.

In addition to her beloved mother, Maureen leaves behind her devoted husband of 33 years David C. Terwilliger; her two loving sons Robert and Matthew; brother John Slattery and wife Linda; sister: Kathleen Powles and husband Steve; brother Vincent Slattery; and numerous nieces, nephews and in-laws.

Maureen was awarded her bachelor’s degree from Mount St. Mary College, in Newburgh in 1983.  She was a salesperson, small business owner, and most importantly a loving wife and devoted mother. She was a woman of faith, hope and determination who cared deeply about church and community. She volunteered and often took leadership roles with numerous organizations, most notably The Church of St. Mary, Bishop Dunn Memorial School, the Cornwall Public Library, Boy Scouts of America and Hospice.

“We are thankful for the wonderful care and support Maureen received from her many friends, physicians and caregivers, most notably Dr. Umangi Patel and her staff,” her family said. “Maureen truly felt you each were a gift whom she loved and deeply cherished.”

Her family received visitors on  May 7 at Quigley Bros. Funeral Home in Cornwall-on-Hudson.  A Mass of Christian Burial was held on May 8 at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church, in Cornwall-on-Hudson, with Rev. William Scafidi officiating. Interment followed the Mass at St. Thomas Cemetery in Cornwall.
