John Arthur LaTerra

John Arthur LaTerra of Locust Grove, Va., passed away after a long illness on March 14 at age 71. Born in Brooklyn on March 13, 1946, he was the younger of two sons born to Sicilian immigrants.
John was a member of the Cornwall Jaycees and organized the youth dances on the tennis courts during the summer of 1972. He was also the driving force behind the Black Rock Fish and Game Club’s Pheasant Preserve. John was a computer programmer in the final years of his career, but he was trained as a horticulturist and it was his true passion. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church in Fredericksburg, Va.
John was known for his jovial personality, generous heart, and for his abundant cooking. John’s Italian roots influenced his love of food and he was never happier than when he was preparing a meal for a crowd of friends with his wife at his side. He was devoted to his family and friends and would open his heart and happily add a chair to his dinner table at any time.
John is survived by his wife of 49 years Loretta (Nuara) LaTerra. He is also survived by his daughters, Jodi (Bryan) Flood of Warrenton, Va. and Amanda LaTerra of Montefalco, Italy; his son, Peter LaTerra of Suzhou, China; granddaughter Lily Flood. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vincent and Catherine (Conti) LaTerra, and his brother Salvatore LaTerra.
A Mass of Christian Burial for John and his father-in-law, Angelo Nuara, will be celebrated on Saturday, July 15 at 11 a.m. at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church, 340 Hudson Street, Cornwall-on-Hudson. Inurnment will follow at St. Thomas Cemetery, Cornwall.

Janine Marie Lewis

Janine Marie Lewis passed away Saturday, July 1, 2017 in Naples, Fla. She was 38 years old.
The daughter of Diane F. Kelley Carcuffe and the late Wayne Carcuffe, she was born February 13, 1979 in Newton, NJ. Janine was a medical office manager for Century 21 Medical Group in Fort Meyers, Fla. and a Mary Kay Independent Beauty Consultant.
Survivors include her husband Daniel Lewis; son Justin Lewis and daughter Courtney Lewis of Naples, Fla.; her mother, Diane F. Carcuffe and sister Marlaina Carcuffe of Highland Falls; brother Vincent Carcuffe of Naples, Fla.; her father and mother-in-law Barry and Kathy Lewis of Ocala, Fla.; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Janine was predeceased by her brother Wayne A. Carcuffe.
Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m Saturday, July 15 at St. Mark’s Baptist Church, 213 Main St., Highland Falls. A Funeral Service will commence at 11 a.m. with Interment to follow in Eagle Valley Cemetery, Town of Highlands.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Mark’s Baptist Church in Highland Falls.

Angelo John Nuara

Angelo Joseph Nuara, 97 years old, a long time resident of Cornwall, passed away on April 18 in Fredericksburg, Va.
Angelo was born in 1920 in New York City to Giovanni and Anna (Splitgerber) Nuara. He married his childhood sweetheart, the love of his life, and dancing partner Catherine Cucinotta while he was serving in the US Army during World War II.
Angelo first came to Cornwall in the 1920’s to the Five Points Mission. He and the family lived on Paradise Hill in Mountainville. He was a member of the Black Rock Fish and Game Glub since 1969. He had an amazing memory and was always sharing stories and singing songs from the 40s. He loved life and being with family and friends. Angelo was always willing to give a hand or go for a drive. If there was a deck of cards, you could be sure that he would start a game of poker.
Angelo is preceded in death by his wife, parents, and siblings Pauline, Emma, and Gus and son-in-law, John LaTerra.
Angelo will be fondly remembered by his daughter Loretta LaTerra; granddaughters Jodi (Bryan) Flood and Amanda LaTerra; grandson Peter LaTerra; great-granddaughter Lily Flood; and by numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family and dear friends.

Norman (Bobby) Tompkins

Norman (Bobby) Tompkins entered into eternal rest on June 24.
He is survived by three daughters and one son; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren with two more due in October. He is also survived by his ex-wife, the mother of his children, Dorothy Nevling.
Services were July 1 at Curry funeral home in Peekskill.
Robert “Bob” Ushman
Died July 9, 2017
Newburgh
On July 9, Robert “Bob” Ushman of Newburgh passed away unexpectedly at the age of 92 after living a full and vibrant life. Bob was loved by his family: his son Wayne Ushman (now of Northborough, Mass.), his daughter-in-law Suzan and his two grandsons, Benjamin and Dov. He was predeceased 11 years ago by his wife, Jeannette Gordon Ushman with whom he shared a loving marriage, nurtured their family and worked side by side at Ushman True Value on Main Street in Cornwall. He joined the musician’s union at 13 and was a talented pianist. For many years, he was a co-owner of the Ray Nelson Band, which played at the Bear Mountain Inn.
His family remembered Bob at his funeral on July 12 at Congregation Agudas Israel in Newburgh. Burial followed at the Beth El Cemetery in West Roxbury Mass.. Shiva (“visiting hours”) will be at his Newburgh home on Sunday and Monday, July 16 and 17, from 2 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Congregation Agudas Israel, 290 North St., Newburgh, NY 12550.

Anne R. Zupitza

Anne R. Zupitza was born in Brooklyn, NY on July 5, 1933. A beautiful loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt passed away at home on July 7. Anne was predeceased by her husband, Joseph; her daughter, Karen Bergin; and her grandson, Robert Zupitza.
Anne grew up in Brooklyn, where she met and married her husband of 60 years, Joseph. They raised four children in Brooklyn, enjoying many summers at Breezy Point Surf Club. They later moved to Cornwall, where they ran their business “The Little Store” on Angola Road. She enjoyed traveling with their motor home whenever possible and spending time on their boat as members of the Cornwall Yacht Club. She treasured family more than anything.
Beloved wife of the late Joseph Zupitza, loving mother of Joanne Decker and her husband, Steve; son-in-law, Kenneth Bergin; Robert Zupitza and his wife, Therese; and Lynne Schweizer and her husband, Scott. She will be sadly missed by her grandchildren; Stephen Decker and his wife, Meghan; William Bergin and his wife, Emily; Dana Zupitza; Sean Bergin and his wife, Katie; Ryan Decker, Joseph Zupitza, Jessica Bergin, Matthew Schweizer and his wife, Melanie; Kaylee Bergin, Brien Schweizer; and John Zupitza; four great grandchildren, Brooklyn Bergin, Eden Schweizer, Benjamin Bergin and Kennedy Bergin.
Memorial visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 15 at Quigley Bros. Funeral Home, 337 Hudson St. Cornwall-on-Hudson. A Funeral Service will follow at 11 a.m. in the funeral home.
