Carina A. Schmidt
September 1, 1956 – May 11, 2017
Highland Falls
After a courageous 12-year battle with sarcoidosis, Carina passed into the Kingdom of Heaven at New York Presbyterian Hospital, surrounded by family and friends. Carina brightened the lives, and touched the hearts, of all who knew her. Her shining eyes, and warm smile, were shared with all.
Carina was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary “Aunt Sid” Canzoneri, born September 1, 1956. She attended Sacred Heart Elementary and Newburgh Free Academy. She went to work for IBM Corporation in East Fishkill, where she spent 18 wonderful years as an administrative assistant and met the love of her life, Frank Schmidt. She left IBM to be a stay-at-home mom to her four beautiful babies, Frankie, Joseph, Mimi and Michael. When the children went off to the Fort Montgomery Elementary School, she joined the staff there as a teacher’s aide in Marcia Parry’s class. After 10 years, her illness forced her to retire. It broke her heart to leave the school, where she loved the staff and children. Carina enjoyed talking on the phone, and posting on social media. She loved her daily Bootsie Riccitelli and Candy Kling calls.
In 2013 Carina received a lung transplant, giving her four additional years of life. In the end, she became an organ donor. At the time of her death, she was surrounded by her loving husband Frank; children Frankie, Joseph, Mimi and Michael; Toni “Bootsie” Riccitelli, Anthony and Pamela Pacione, Toni Kozlowski, Jessica and Lincoln Morehead, Christopher Denisar Sr., Christopher Denisar Jr., and Maryssa Denisar.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Wednesday, May 17 at Sacred Heart Church, Newburgh. Please consider making a donation to New York Presbyterian Hospital, to enable Dr. Lori Shah and great staff on the lung transplant team “to make amazing things to happen.” Arrangements by Brooks Funeral Home.
