Richard Browne

formerly of Highland Falls
Richard (Richie) Walter Browne, 73, died peacefully at home in Sausalito, Calif. on Sunday April 2.
Richard grew up at the U.S. Military Academy, with his father Capt. Walter Browne, the Academy golf coach, and his mother Katherine. He attended the Manilus Military School, and graduated from Highland Falls High School. He went on to earn a degree in golf agronomy from University of Massachusetts and became a well-respected golf pro. He was the beloved golf superintendent at Garrison Golf Course for 30 years.
A sportsman, he played hockey, football, golf, hunted, fished and had a love for horse racing. With his passion for friends and family he loved cooking, entertaining and dancing. He enjoyed his Guinness beer with a shot of Green spot and suffered through many years as a frustrated Jets fan.
Upon semi-retiring in Sausalito, Calif., Richard embarked on a new path, becoming a “local” cab driver for four years. As a cab driver he became a friend and confidant and well-too- often the guardian for the unencumbered. He embraced his new life with his wife Miriam and they became members of the Sausalito Yacht Club. He made great friends and still cherishing his life in NY and those lifelong friendships.
Richard is survived by his loving wife Miriam; sons Richard and Gregory Browne and spouses Deb and Claire Browne; step-daughter Zamira and husband Paul Solari; four grandchildren. Alexis & Owen Browne, Ava & Sevi Solari; brother Lansing Browne and spouse Eleanor; sister Lonnie Browne Martens and husband Rick; deceased sister Barri Lambert; Phoebe Browne, mother of his sons; and six nieces and nephews. His parents were Walter R. Browne and Katherine Browne, both deceased.
Donations in Richard’s memory may be made to Hospice By the Bay who cared for him in his last days, or to the brave men and women of the Sausalito Fire Department.
