Girls win first five lacrosse matches
Playing almost every day last week, the Lady Dragons showed that their opening day win was an omen of good things to come.
Cornwall defeated NFA 14-2, FDR 17-5, O’Neill 13-5 and Washingtonville 14-5. The Lady Dragons have mounted a balanced attack, with four different players contributing 10 or more goals.
In the closing seconds of the FDR match, an opposing player broke free and fired a close-range shot at the net, which goalkeeper Jess Gurrieri fielded cleanly to end the game.
Jess may have been the only Cornwall starter to play the entire contest. After the Dragons built a quick 10-0 lead, Coach Taryn Brechbiel shuffled her lineup for the rest of the afternoon.
Through their first five matches, the girls have outscored their opponents 72-23.
Goals-assists: Vangas 16-2, Incognoli 15-9, Shaw 12-1, McGuire 11-8, Kelsey 7-1, C. Fitzgerald 6-1, Dunning 4-2, Norton 1-0, Cavazza 0-4, Fay 0-1, Mellon 0-1. Five-game totals.
St. Germain first in Mountie 800
Connor St. Germain stayed close to the lead in Suffern on Friday night. Then, with 100 yards to go, he sprinted to the front of the pack to finish first in the metric half mile.
He was one of two Cornwall athletes to win an event in the Mountie Madness Meet on April 21. Liz Manderson couldn’t match her 119-foot toss from the previous week, but she still finished first in the discus — beating the runner-up by a matter of inches.
Sophomores Blaine Doyle and Seth Bywater didn’t finish among the leaders in the 1600-meter run, but they posted their fastest times ever.

Baseball team rallies against Liberty
The Dragons had a long day on Saturday and a long ride to Liberty on Monday. But a three-run rally made the trip worthwhile.
Trailing 4-3 in the final inning, Cornwall tied the game on a single by Ian Engenito and took the lead on a sacrifice fly by Matt Krafft. The final score was 6-4 with Kevin Brady getting the win in relief.
On Saturday, the varsity players were busy. They attended Little League’s Opening Day ceremonies and then hosted a doubleheader — falling to Valley Central 6-0 and Port Jervis 1-0.
In the first game, the visitors scored all their runs in the second inning. Then reliever Alex Gomez shut them down the rest of the way.
In the nightcap, Port Jervis used a two-out squeeze bunt in the fifth inning to spoil an excellent outing by Jackson Geddes, who hurled a complete game and allowed just three hits.
The loss snapped Cornwall’s winning streak against league rivals. The Dragons had extended the streak to 23 games on April 18 with a 6-1 win at Port Jervis.

Boys outscore Middies in lacrosse
Victories haven’t come easy this season, but the Dragons had a strong home game against Middletown on April 24. They won 11-4, as Kyle O’Brien stopped 17 shots, drawing repeated cheers from the home fans. Cameron Growney scored the final goal of the afternoon — racing through a gauntlet of sticks, holding onto the ball, and finding the net at close range.
Things looked good for the Dragons on April 21, but visiting Clarkstown scored the last three goals of the afternoon for a 10-9 victory in overtime. Jack Gaillard had three scores, including one in the first half when the Dragons were shorthanded. Jack faked a ground shot and then slipped the ball over the goalie’s lowered stick.
“You gotta love our eighth-graders,” Assistant Coach Dave Corey said after Gaillard’s goal. The Dragons with a young team have a 2-4 record (including a loss to Kingston on April 19). They have yet to face a league opponent.
Goals-assists (last 3 games): Gaillard 9-4, Cabrera 7-1, Growney 4-1, Rose 1-4, Donovan 1-0, Musco 1-0, Havey 0-1.
Softball girls see averages soar

Sarah Stevens and Victoria Crozier got credit for the wins on the mound. Megan Sanchez relieved for an inning in Monticello and struck out the side.
