Marion E. Bainton

Marion Eleanor Bainton (Fretterd), a former longtime resident of Highland Falls, New York, passed away on January 25 in the Colonial Nursing Home, Weymouth, Mass.
Marion Fretterd was born to Charles and Katherine Fretterd (Waegele) on Dec. 6, 1923 on Staten Island. Her family soon moved to the Bronx, where she grew up. Following graduation from high school, she worked at the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. She married Joseph Bainton in 1943, and they moved to Highland Falls in 1951 to raise their family.
Marion was active in community affairs as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader, and the local Humane Society. As secretary of the PTA and Girl Scouts, she submitted articles to The News of the Highlands about the groups’ activities. Additionally, she worked as a bookkeeper for her husband’s business, J&K Service Station.
Marion was an accomplished cook, sharing her love of food with family, friends, and neighbors. She was a common sight in town as she walked up and down Mountain Ave. every day to shop at the Grand Union. Marion was also known for her green thumb and love of beautiful flowers and shrubs, and for adopting many stray animals that ventured into her yard.
She is survived by her daughters Kathleen Marshall and husband Jack, and Jo Ann De Clercq and husband Bob. She is also survived by three grandsons Jim, Paul and wife Beth, and Peter and wife Deirdre; as well as four great-grandchildren Lucy, Tyler, Aoife and Samantha.
Marion was preceded in death by seven siblings; husband Joseph; and great granddaughter Sofia.

Robert N. Bruno
February 27, 1953-January 28, 2017

Robert N. Bruno, of New Windsor, entered into eternal rest on Jan. 28 at his residence, surrounded by his loved ones. He was 63 years old.
The son of the late Salvatore and Gloria (Sharpe) Bruno, Robert was born in the Bronx on Feb. 27, 1953. He was the Owner/Operator of Bruno Brothers Automotive Tech in New Windsor.
He was an active member of the Cornwall Yacht Club, and Pirate Canoe Club. He enjoyed boating, snowmobiling, and most of all, the company of friends and family. He was a loving father and grandfather. He will be missed greatly.
Robert is survived by his loving wife, Gail E. Blair-Bruno; his son, Robert N. Bruno, Jr. and his wife Janet of Newburgh; his daughter, Christine Vallarreal of Montgomery; his step-children, John T. Blair of Lakeside, Ariz. and Melissa L. Gottron and her husband Fran of Union Vale, N.Y.; and three grandchildren, Alec Babcock, Emily Vallarreal, and Mia Gottron. In addition to his parents, Robert was predeceased by his brother, Jack Bruno; and his sister, Linda Bruno.
The family received visitors on Feb. 1 at Quigley Bros. Funeral Home in Cornwall-on-Hudson. A funeral service was held on Thursday, Feb. 2 at the funeral home. Cremation was due to take place at Cedar Hill Crematory, Middle Hope.

Joan Durnin-Anderson

Joan C. Durnin-Anderson of Middletown, and formerly of Highland Falls, passed away on Jan. 27 at Orange Regional Medical Center. She was 79 years old.
She was born on July 6, 1937 in Brooklyn. A homemaker, she was a loving Mom and beloved by all who knew her. She enjoyed painting, arts and crafts, and decorating. She was an avid reader and loved going to lunch with her girls.
She is survived by her three daughters: Janice Pepe and husband, Tom of Warwick, Kelly Chaffee and husband, Charlie of Goshen, and Mariann Bott and husband, Jim of Pine Bush; her loving grandchildren: Tanya Rodriguez, Jonathan Cames, Candice Durnin, Erin Chaffee and Noah Bott; and sister Patricia Morgan of Fort Montgomery.

Carla Magnell-Apostola

Carla Joy Magnell-Apostola 75, of Lexington, S.C. passed Friday, Jan. 20 after a long illness. She is the daughter of the late John and Helen Magnell.
She attended Highland Falls High School and was formerly employed by the Department of Defense at West Point, and the National Guard in St. Augustine, Fla.
Survivors include her son, Frank Blackmon; grandchildren, Carly Miata, Lindsay Brayda, Lacey Watson and Myranda Barton; and her great-grandchildren, Colton and Hunter Boothe.
She was very much loved and will be missed by all.
Margaret “Gretta” McLaughlin

Margaret (“Gretta”) McLaughlin (nee McCann) was born in Drumnatrade, County Cavan, Ireland in June 1924 to Annie (nee Tierney) and Terence McCann. She went to Dublin at 15, joining Jury’s Hotel where she worked for 10 years before emigrating to New York City, where she met her husband John.
They moved to Cornwall-on-Hudson in 1956 to open McLaughlin’s Bar and Grill. In 1965 they opened the Orchard Hotel in Verplank, NY. Returning to Cornwall in 1967 to open the Leprechaun Inn, which John and Gretta operated until their retirement in 1984.
She is predeceased by her husband of 50 years, John. She is survived by her children, John (“Sean”) McLaughlin and his wife Joan (Beck) and Philomena (“Nina”) and her husband, John Ross; as well as her beloved grandchildren, Larissa and Ian Ross. She was predeceased by her brothers and sisters, Anne, Mae, Thomas, Bridget, Terence and Kathleen. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 3 at Quigley Bros. Funeral Home, 337 Hudson St. Cornwall-on-Hudson. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4 at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church, 340 Hudson Street, Cornwall-on-Hudson. Interment will follow the Mass at St. Thomas Cemetery, Cornwall.

Josephine McGuinness

Josephine McGuinness, a longtime resident of Cornwall, passed away on Jan. 30 at home in Cornwall-on-Hudson, where she lived with her son and his family for the last seven years of her life. She was 93.
She was born on Dec. 10, 1923 in Northvale, NJ, the daughter of Joseph Appendino and Ceasarina Ostino Appendino. She was married to Patrick J. McGuinness, Jr. from Feb. 4, 1950 until he died on Feb. 18, 2005.
Josephine was a retired registered nurse. She graduated from nursing school at Holy Name Hospital in Teaneck, N.J., and later worked at Cornwall Hospital and Keller Army Hospital. She was a devoted member of St. Thomas of Canterbury Church in Cornwall-on-Hudson, and went to Mass daily well into her 80’s.
She was a member of the Catholic Daughters – Court Rita of the same parish. Josephine loved reading, doing Sudoku puzzles and playing chess with her grandchildren. She will be missed for her spirited religious debates as well as her devotion to God and the unborn. She loved and was very proud of her grandchildren.
Survivors include her children, Patrick J. McGuinness, III and his wife, Lorraine, of Cornwall-on-Hudson, and Anne M. Ferris and her husband, John, of Cornwall; her grandchildren, Meghan L. McGuinness-Risano and her husband, Brendon; Patrick H. McGuinness; John M. Ferris, Jr. Kathryn R. Ferris; her sisters Theresa Carr and Margaret Carlson of Orlando, Fla. She was predeceased by her brother, John Appendino, and sister, Mary Appendino.
Friends may call from 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 5 at Quigley Bros. Funeral Home, in Cornwall-on-Hudson. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Feb. 6, at St. Thomas of Canterbury R.C. Church, Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY, and will be followed by burial at St. Thomas Cemetery in Cornwall.

James F. (“Red”)Reilly

James F. Reilly, of Cornwall, and Seminole, Fla., formerly of Hopewell Junction, N.Y., passed away peacefully on Jan. 26 at Montgomery Nursing Home with his family at his side.
Red was a Plumber by trade, working at General Motors in Tarrytown before retiring. He was a hard working husband and father, who always had our best interests at heart. He rarely complained about anything, except maybe the horses. He was a member of the AOH – Division 2, Cornwall, and enjoyed all things Irish, especially his Guinness.
Red was predeceased by his parents, James and Anne Reilly. He leaves behind his wife of 55 years, Barbara; two daughters, Karen and fiancée’ Michael Scanlon and MaryEllen; one granddaughter, Jade; as well as several nieces and nephews; his sisters-in-laws, Caroline Reilly and Catherine Rose and her husband Steve. In addition to his parents, Red was predeceased by his brother, Francis Reilly, M.D.
His family received visitors. on Jan. 28 at Quigley Bros. Funeral Home in Cornwall-on-Hudson. Cremation took place at Cedar Hill Crematory. Interment of cremains will be at Orange County Veteran’s Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
