The Library’s Veterans Day program received a lot of publicity. Librarians promoted it at story hours and other family events. The commander of Post 353 mentioned the event at the end of the Nov. 11 observance at the triangle. Many people who attended the ceremony stopped at the library before heading home.
It was a worthwhile visit. Youth Librarian Liz Fischer filled the room with memorabilia. On the Wall of Honor, she mounted almost 80 photographs of local people in uniform. Some of the pictures date back to the Korean War or even World War II.
Over the years residents have brought in snapshots for the library to scan and add to its collection. On the Wall of Honor, each of these pictures includes the person’s name. So part of the fun is trying to recognize people from the way they looked years ago.
On display was George Kane’s uniform from the Vietnam era as well as the uniform and helmet worn by Helen Bunt’s grandfather in World War I.
Veterans lingered at the reception, which lasted from 11:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. Several of them related their military experiences to visitors who stopped by to chat. One of the incentives for staying were the snacks and baked goods that volunteers brought in on the morning of the event.
