Town Recreation program has its own personality

Shannon Wolfrum
A week before her first PiYo demonstration at Laurel Crest Park, Shannon Wolfrum helps her son Robert enjoy a tire ride at the Town Park playground.

“It’s got its own personality,” Shannon Wolfrum said as she explained PiYo while pushing her son Robert on a tire in the playground.

Mrs. Wolfrum will be leading a PiYo program for the Town Recreation Department in Laurel Crest Park. Before people sign up. they can attend a free demonstration at 9:15 a.m. on either Sept. 13 or 15.

PiYo’s unusual name is a combination of the first two letters of “pilates” and “yoga.” The discipline includes a little of both. “It’s a mixture of yoga moves, pilates techniques and body weight exercises,” the instructor said. “It involves no equipment and increases flexibility. Once you’ve learned it, you can continue practicing at home.”

Like PiYo, Mrs. Wolfrum is new to Cornwall — well relatively new. Originally from Alabama, she moved here with her family two years ago. Her husband, Robert, is a football coach at West Point, who was naturally very happy after the team’s opening day win.

Mrs. Wolfrum, with a degree in exercise science, has led fitness classes at Sportsplex and West Point. She’s also led groups for the Town Recreation Department.

“Anyone can do PiYo,” she told us. “It’s great for any fitness level, and can be modified for beginners. It’s a good total workout for anyone who’s willing to sweat.”

Sessions will be held from 9:15 to 10 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays between Sept. 20 and Oct. 27. Participants can sign up for three or 12 sessions. If they want, they can bring their toddlers and take them to the playground when the exercise session is over. In the case of bad weather, the classes will be moved to Munger Cottage.

For prices and information, or to reserve a spot, call the Town Recreation Department (534-2070) or visit the one-story building behind Town Hall.  People can also reach out to Shannon Wolfrum at 256-654-4113 or fx4fitness@outlook.com.
