Youngest baseball team needs one more win

After losing their opening game, the Dragons reeled off eight straight victories. They needed one more win to claim the district flag. They were due to play Minisink-Otisville on July 13, shortly after the Local went to press.

-Cornwall started the second week of the tournament by blanking Monroe-Woodbury American 10-0, the team responsible for the Dragons’ only loss.

-Next came an 11-1 victory over the Town of Wallkill. Dylan Hayes was the winning pitcher, and Tommie Shaw sparked the offense with three hits.

-Wallace Kirkpatrick (five for five) was the hitting star in a 23-4 romp over Tri-Valley.

-A Saturday morning game against Montgomery was much tougher. M.J. Salisbury launched two drives over the center fielder’s head to help his teammates score nine runs in the first two innings. That was all the runs Coach Fischer’s team would get. But it was enough for a 9-7 victory.

Left fielder Colin Spaulding threw a runner out at the plate. Right fielder Andrew Wingfield relayed to Shaw to get an out at third base, with Tyler Sottolano applying the tag.

-The Dragons’ season almost ended on Monday night. They tied the game in their last at bat, and then won 10-8 over Pine Bush in extra innings. Lucas Jachens got the win in relief; Luciano Fiorello contributed three hits, while Dylan Hayes and Patrick Cosgrove were outstanding in the field.

-With the Dragon pitching options limited, Brian Fischer took the mound on Tuesday night against undefeated Minisink-Otisville. Fischer had hurled just one inning all summer. But he got the job done, as the Dragons walloped their hosts 14-1.

Cornwall scored eight runs in the opening inning, so the outcome was never in doubt.

Football season starts before school

The Dragons open their season at home against Middletown on the Friday night before Labor Day. School doesn’t start until the following Tuesday.

The Sept. 10 visit to Stepinac is likely to be the toughest game on the schedule. On Sept. 23, the Dragons host Port Jervis in a match-up of last year’s section finalists.

Minor girls outscored their opponents

The 9-10 softball players outscored their opponents 24-14, while winning two out of four games.

After dropping the opening game of the tournament, the girls posted back-to-back wins against Pine Bush (11-0) and Warwick (12-3).

Melanie Fiumara and Alyson Sanchez split both games on the mound. Against Warwick, they whiffed 11 batters and allowed just two people to hit safely.

Cara Malone had three hits for the Dragons, while Savannah Azoff and Kelly Hogan both had two. Gianna Lomoriello contributed a double.

The girls’ season ended on Saturday, July 9 with a 5-0 loss to Minisink-Otisville.

10-11s rebound after opening day loss

The 10-11s are following the example of their younger league mates. The Dragons started the tournament with a loss and then rebounded with three straight wins.

They beat Wallkill Area 5-1, with Carter Hershberger getting the win and Mike Fahey contributing a double. Then they pounded Pine Bush 11-1 (details of the game were not available), and eliminated Monroe-Woodbury 8-3.

Cameron Zamparelli struck out 11 batters in the Monroe-Woodbury game, and Timmy Patterson led the attack with a pair of base hits.

Varsity Coach Chris Miller ran the program in the high school gym from July 5-9. He split the girls into three age groups, which he named Big East, Ivy League and ACC.
