Every year the New York Press Association holds a Better Newspaper Contest and announces the winners at its annual convention.
When the association met in Saratoga Springs on April 8-9, it presented three advertising awards to the Local. In keeping with tradition, journalists from another state made the selections. This year, members of the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association reviewed the entries, and gave two second-place awards and a third place to the Local.
All three ads appeared in issues related to special occasions. The judges said that our Memorial Day tribute was beautifully executed. They gave it second place for Best Large Space ad, and said “the feeling it evokes is outstanding.”
In Best House Ad category, the arbiters awarded third place to our special Veterans Day Page, while praising its typography and striking image.
The other recognized ad related to an important event in the life of the community rather than a national holiday. The people from Washington picked the Local for second place in the area of Multi-Advertiser Pages.
The event was the start of another school year, and the praise we received was gratifying. “Back to School Safety is dynamite,” the judges said. “Awesome use of graphics, color selections and the sponsor listing all pull this together.”
In the annual contest, newspapers are separated into two divisions based on their circulation.
