Fred Howard

Fred Howard, of Cornwall, entered into rest on Saturday, March 12.
The son of the late Alexander and Alice Howard, he was born on June 16, 1932.
Fred was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. A lifelong Cornwall resident, he served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict. He worked as a truck driver for many years for Affron Fuel Oil. He was a member of Highland Engine Company, and was a Grand Master in the Masonic Lodge in Cornwall.
Fred devoted almost 50 years as pipe major and director of the MacCleod’s of Cornwall Pipes and Drums. During this time, he instructed and mentored students of all ages, and inspired people in many different ways.
Survivors include: his children: Fred Dean Howard and wife Ruth of Bloomingburg, N.Y.; William Stewart Howard and wife, Margaret of Dunedin, Fla.; Shelley Ann Keyes and husband Robert of Ridgefield, Conn.; his siblings: Arthur Howard, Elizabeth O’Dell, Alexander Howard, Bonnie Fay; many beloved nieces and nephews; and also by his dear friend and companion, Jeanne Behr. He was predeceased by his wife, Judith Lee Howard, his daughter Judith Lee McCarthy, and brother Robert J. Howard.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, April 3 at 11 a.m. at Munger Cottage Senior Center in Cornwall. Friends and family are invited to attend. Individuals connected with the band are invited to wear kilts and to bring pipes.
Interment is private and at the convenience of the family.
