Several Town and Village residents received phone calls last week from someone claiming to represent the IRS or the Department of the Treasury. The calls, which included a request for money, were fraudulent. So were the threats of immediate legal action if the payment wasn’t made.
The IRS and the Department of the Treasury don’t conduct business in this way. If an account is in arrears, the taxpayer is notified by mail. The Town website cautions people not to give out personal information over the phone.
Village Police Chief Steve Dixon urges people to hang up, if they receive this type of call, and to notify the police as soon as possible.
