Wrestlers second in Greeley Tournament

Cornwall was the runner-up out of 10 teams at the Horace Greeley tournament in Chappaqua. Coach Don Blaine’s grapplers won four out of five matches.

Cornwall 33 John Jay CR 48

Dustin Mann at 106 pounds and John Cassidy at 195 were undefeated for the day. Both are relative newcomers. Dustin, a freshman, didn’t wrestle for the varsity or junior varsity last year. John, a junior, had a 7-4 record with the varsity and an 8-4 mark with the jayvee team.

Cornwall will be hosting the Dragon Duals on Saturday, with the competition starting at 10 a.m. Leading the Dragons are captains Matt Masterson, Nick Russo and Ryan Vizethann. All three of them played football during the fall. Matt Masterson is still recovering from an injury.

Dragons swim against Burke and themselves

The Dragons tweaked their lineup for the Dec. 4 meet with Burke. They were facing a new team with only eight swimmers. It was almost impossible for the Dragons to lose. So to make the afternoon more interesting, they chose a green team and a white team and kept track of their scores.

There were some close races between teammates. For example, two-tenths of a second separated Robert Galeano and Ciaran O’Gorman in the 100-yard freestyle. Jonathan Gagnon and Zach Zagon were even closer in the 500-yard race.

Besides the altered lineup for the informal intrasquad competition, the Dragons introduced a new diver. Swimmer Dan Ramsey asked for a chance to go off the board. A former gymnast, he learned six dives on Thursday afternoon, and scored 100.15 points on Friday.

Ben Vondrak posted a fast time in the backstroke after swimming an extra half lap. The starter halted the race because of a problem with the microphone. But Ben didn’t realize that, so he swam to the far end of the pool before a teammate jumped into the water and stopped him.

Despite the extra effort, Ben finished 10 yards in front of the runner-up when the race actually counted. The victory over Burke followed a 101-82 triumph in Kingston.

Firsts: Vondrak 4, O’Gorman 3, Sullivan 2, Washington 2, Jon Gagnon 1, Galeano 1, Hwang 1, Vega 1.

Boys looking for first basketball win

After a busy first week, the Dragons were still looking for their first win. They lost 53-41 to Monroe-Woodbury after closing the gap to four points. And they dropped a pair of games in the Warwick Coaches Vs. Cancer Tip-Off Classic — falling to Wallkill 57-38 and New Paltz 62-33.

In the consolation game, Cornwall played a good second quarter — cutting the New Paltz lead to 25-17.

After the intermission, Jason Bailey stole the ball and drew a foul as he drove to the basket. Jason made both shots to reduce the Huguenots’ lead to six points. A moment later Dom Marzigliano picked off a pass and fired the ball downcourt.

But the Dragons missed the lay-up and their opponents answered with 13 straight points to put the game out of reach. Jason Bailey was named to the all-tournament team.

Points (3 games): Bailey 29, Handforth 23, Marzigliano 20, Hartnett 17, Marlow 14,  Flint 4, Alemany 2, M. Robinson 2, Coston 1.

Indoor track season starts on Dec. 11

The Dragons return to West Point on Friday night for the first indoor meet of the season.

Eight of last year’s state qualifiers have graduated, but Gabby Fanning (600 meters) and Katie Murphy (high jump) are still on the roster.

Victoria Caroli and Hannah Mellino, who won state medals in cross country this fall, will be running for the Lady Dragons. So will Kayla Meade, who finished first in the Division III sprint last January.

For the boys, Dave Brubacher (a state medalist in cross country) is back along with Alex Vega, who won a division crown in the 1,000 meter run last winter.

Malone scores 27 in hoops loss at Highland

Coach Chris Miller doesn’t like to lose, but he was unperturbed by a close loss in Highland on Friday night, Dec. 4. “We’ll be better in a month than we are now,” the coach predicted. “And we’ll be even better than that in February.”

The teams were tied until the third quarter when Highland opened up a seven point lead on its way to a 57-50 win. The Dragons’ Maggie Malone, a freshman, led all scorers with 27 points. It was the highest one-game total for a Cornwall player since Renee Briggs scored 33 against Port Jervis in February 2014.

Points: Malone 27, Incognoli 6, Vinett 6. Davet 5, Barbier 4, M. Moreau.2, Threes: Incognoli 2, Barbier 1, Davet 1.

Burke players raise American cancer funds

Julia Parker, Michelle Zummo and Coach Andrea Zummo helped the Burke volleyball team raise $2,392 for the American Cancer Society. The team presented a check to the society at the school’s fall sports awards ceremony.
