Michelle Scherer Abels

July 1, 2015

Michelle Scherer Abels of Walden, a retired teacher for the Cornwall Central School District, and a lifetime resident of the area, went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, July 1. Like St. Paul, Michelle fought the good fight, finished the race and kept the faith with her family by her side at Sloan Kettering Memorial Hospital in New York City.  She was 64.

Also like St. Paul, Michelle devoted her life to serving her fellow man, whether it was by feeding people at the homeless shelter, Winterhaven, visiting patients at Hospice, or imbuing her students with a love of reading. Michelle shared her passion with her students by pioneering a book club in Cornwall Central Middle School. It was invariably the most popular after-school club.

Any profits from the club’s fundraisers were donated to Winterhaven or Gabe’s Chemo Ducks, a pediatric cancer foundation.

The daughter of the late Wendell and Margaret Fitzgerald Scherer, she was born on March 21, 1951 in Kingston, N.Y. She was a member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Walden.

While Michelle also loved to cook and garden, her greatest passion was being a wife and mother. Survivors include her husband Arthur D. Abels at home; daughters Kathryn F. Abels and Wendy S. Abels at home; grandson Fitzgerald M. Abels-Hatch at home; brother Wendell A. Scherer and wife Nora of Kingston; sister Anne M. Davis of Kingston; sister Kathryn Goldpaugh and husband Tom of Kingston; sister Margaret Davis and husband Steve of Golden, Col. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.
