On Wednesday afternoon, Orange County Judge Robert H. Freehill set bail, for Angelika Graswald, at $3 million cash over $9 million bond. This means, before she can be released from Orange County Jail, she must come up with $3 million in cash or a bail bond in the amount of $9 million.
Graswald was arrested, and charged with muder in the second degree, 11 days after her fiance, Vincent Viafore, went missing on the Hudson River when his kayak capsized. New York State Police arrested her based on inconsistencies in her statement, but provided no additional details.
Graswald recently retained the services of attorney Richard Portale, whose first order of business was to submit a bail application.
In court, Portale requested his client be released on her own recognizance while county District Attorney David Hoovler offered remand or $2 million over $6 million in bail.
Should Graswald come up with the money, she must appear in court for a bail source hearing to offer proof of the source of bail.
Following the brief hearing, Hoovler issued the following statement, “The investigation is continuing. The bail application proceedings before Judge Freehill revealed the preliminaries of the case.”
