Director Marietta Moulton has 18 four-star performers in this year’s middle school show.
That’s not a comment on the students’ acting or singing ability — although they’re all impressive on stage. It’s a measure of their longevity.
The kids who merit four stars have appeared in a show during each of their four years in the middle school. They’ll be on the stage together in a scene involving sailors. And their names will be displayed on a banner in the auditorium.
However, they’re not the only reason why people will enjoy the show. Mrs. Moulton said it took her years to get the rights to present it. During a dress rehearsal, we peeked backstage while the lead characters were singing the title song. Several kids behind the curtain were dancing. Spectators in the audience may be tempted to do that too.
The scenes change quickly. And the stage is frequently filled with kids in bright costumes. The four-star performers make up a small portion of the cast that includes more than 100 students.
For those who’ve left their childhood behind, “Chiti” is a magical car that can float on water or fly. “Chiti” becomes airborne on two occasions in the middle school production. And with 100 kids on stage, the audience won’t be able to see how the car gets off the ground.
There were two casts that were due to take turns performing the show between Wednesday, March 11 and Saturday. (Curtain time is 7 p.m.) At the first performance, the audience will include elementary students (who may join the drama club in the future) and high school kids who are coming back to visit. Some of those high-schoolers are former four-star performers.
