Maria Stewart
December 27, 1940-February 12, 2015
Maria Stewart passed away on Feb. 12 at the Putnam Hospital Center. She was 74.
The daughter of the late Reginaldo and Sophie Guarino Cappella, she was born on Dec. 27, 1940 at her parents’ home in Jamaica, N.Y.
Showing musical talent at an early age, she began piano lessons at 4. Maria performed multiple times with the New York School of Music Concerts at Carnegie Hall as a child.
Performance was not to be her destiny however, and she turned to education. After graduating from Immaculata High School in Manhattan she earned a degree in Music Education from the State University of New York at Fredonia. Accepting a teaching position in Cornwall, she moved to the area shortly after her marriage to Malcolm Stewart. Maria taught elementary music for many years before moving to Cornwall Central High School where she taught from 1979 until 2003. A true educator, through music she worked to foster in her students a sense of pride and accomplishment in all that they did — firmly believing that she had a responsibility to not just teach music, but to help young people recognize and strive to achieve their potential.
Maria was a member of the New York State United Teachers Union, the Orange County Music Educators Association, the New York State School Music Association and St. John’s Episcopal Church in Cornwall.
She is survived by her son, Scott A. Stewart and his husband Daniel Santiago-Stewart, and her beloved grandson, Benjamin Santiago-Stewart of Cornwall-on-Hudson. She was predeceased by her husband Malcolm J. Stewart and her daughter Leigh Anne Stewart.
Visitation took place on Feb. 16 at James F. Lulves Funeral Home in Cornwall-on-Hudson. Funeral services were held on Feb. 17 at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Cornwall.
Memorial donations may be made to the Laryssa Raimondo Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 506, Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY 12520.
