It was a good way to start the new year. Cornwall won five events in a Jan. 2 meet in which every race was a relay.
In a field of 13 schools at the West Point Field House, the Dragon boys and girls both finished first in the 1600 and 3200-meter relays. The girls also captured the distance-medley relay as they virtually lapped every team in the race.
In individual events, Frank Orlando extended his school record in the weight throw and also placed among the leaders in the shot put. Athena Blair was third in the race walk, where she is continuing to improve. Two years ago, she broke the Cornwall record for the event while qualifying for the state championships. She missed last season, but shows signs of getting back to where she was in 2013.
Sarah Curtin was third in the shot put. Christa Sidoti, the section’s outdoor pentathlon champion, was among the leaders in the long jump. And Katarina Van Ledtje was the runner up in the pole vault. Katarina has cleared at least nine feet in every competition this year.
