Although many are hooked on new technology, some still find joy in cracking open the pages of a book. But what is one to do once they’re finished reading that book? They could pass it on to another family member or friend, or it could find a permanent place on a book shelf. Through Jan. 9, the Cornwall Middle School is presenting another option.
In conjunction with the United Way, students are encouraged to drop off any lightly used books which will then be delivered to United Way offices in Poughkeepsie and Montgomery.
“In my own house, when my kids finish books we don’t know what to do with them,” said middle school principal Kate Polumbo. “This is a really great way to share the reading experience with other kids and other people in the community.”
This is the first year the middle school is participating in this fund raiser and already over 250 books have been collected. Polumbo said she heard about the effort via e-mail.
“I thought it would be a good idea to take books students have already read and be able to recycle them to other members of the community who would be able to take advantage of the books our students have already experienced,” said Polumbo.
Greeters at the middle school have been collecting books since the second week of December. Students have also been able to drop off books in the main office.
The rest of the district is also assisting in the effort. Students at the high school have been able to drop off books in the library while greeters at the three elementary schools have been accepting donations.
Polumbo said she would be sending students home with another message to parents in the hopes of collecting additional donations the first week and a half of the new year.
