Cornwall-on-Hudson Trustee James Kane is being deployed to Afghanistan at the end of this month. He announced his departure at last Monday night’s board meeting.
Mr. Kane, a lieutenant colonel in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps, may be gone for as long as 11 months. During that time, in accordance with the Hatch Act and a Department of Defense directive, he will be on a leave of absence from the board. He will not receive Village pay while he’s gone, and he will not participate in any board decisions or votes.
Now in his third term, Mr. Kane was re-elected without opposition in March. An attorney in private practice, he has lived in the Village for a dozen years.
In a Monday morning phone conversation, the trustee referred to the remarks made by the American Legion commander at the recent Memorial Day ceremony. “You find 100 percent Americanism in Cornwall,” Peter Kurpeawski had told the crowd.
Mr. Kane echoed that sentiment. “So many people have offered to help my family in my absence,” he said. “This community has been outstanding.”
