Richard Adam Denega

October 18, 1948-March 17, 2014

Richard Adam Denega of Highland Mills died on Monday, March 17 at Orange Regional Medical Center after a brief battle with pulmonary disease.

Richard was born in New York City on Oct. 18, 1948 and attended Cardinal Hayes High School and The School of Visual Arts. He worked as a freelance photographer and Corrections Officer for the State of New York. He was a member of the Woodbury Community Association, a Formula 1 racing enthusiast, a history buff, and an avid sports fan.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Ann Denega of Highland Mills; son Erik Adam Denega, daughter-in-law Michelle Denega, granddaughter Leah Denega of Cornwall-on-Hudson, son Mark Alexander Denega of Summit, N.J.; son Matthew Richard Denega of Highland Mills; daughter Danielle Marie Denega, son-in-law Brian Kannry, granddaughter Grace Kannry of Charlottesville, VA.

A memorial service with visitation was held on March 22 at Quigley Bros. Funeral Home in Cornwall-on-Hudson. Roger E. Merritt

February 23, 1935-March 22, 2014

Roger E. Merritt, of Las Vegas, Nev., passed away on March 22 after a long illness. He was 79 and a former resident of Cornwall-on-Hudson.

The son of the late Emmett P. Merritt and Marjorie Corwin Merritt, he was born on Feb. 23, 1935 in Cornwall.

He was a Newburgh Free Academy and Cornell University graduate.  After college he served in the U.S. Army. He was a teacher for the Newburgh School System for 29 years. We will remember him as a loving husband, devoted son, caring brother and the world’s best dad. He was a quiet man who enjoyed gardening, classical music, wood carving, the great outdoors but most of all spending time with his family.

He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Helen Thomas Merritt; his son, James R. Merritt and his wife Kerry of Cornwall-on-Hudson; his daughter, Susan P. Merritt and her husband Edward Shinn of Las Vegas, Nev.; his son, Peter J. Merritt and his wife Cheryl of North Kingstown, R.I.; grandsons JD, Shane, Hayden and Colin Merritt. He is also survived by his brother Thurl Merritt of Newburgh; his sister Pamela Donato and her husband Carmen of Cornwall; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister-in- law Barbara Merritt.

There will be no visitation; cremation and burial will be held privately.

Marjorie E. Morgan

September 26, 1928-March 18, 2014

Marjorie E. Morgan died at her home in Newburgh on March 18. She was 85, and a former resident of Cornwall.

The daughter of William and Margaret Leonard Kreig, she was born on Sept. 26, 1928 in Newburgh. She was retired after having worked as a clerk in the Newburgh branch of Sears.

“Marjorie was an extraordinary mother, grandmother, sister and friend,” her family said. “She loved to have luncheons, parties, and loved to garden. Her favorite season was fall; her favorite color red. She loved music, especially Tony Bennett, and her favorite song was ‘Stardust.’”

Survivors include her son William Hernandez and Gretchen of Santa Fe, N.M.; her daughter Michele Herrera and husband Oscar of Newburgh; her sister Alice Belladone of Cornwall; her grandchildren Morgan Herrera and Louis, Blake Herrera and Erin Hernandez. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Vincent Morgan, in 1983, and by her brothers William and Thomas Kreig.

The family received visitors on Friday, March 21 at Quigley’s Funeral Parlor in Cornwall-on-Hudson. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on March 22 at St, Thomas of Canterbury Church and was followed by burial in St. Thomas Cemetery in Cornwall.
