Brendan Seamus Clerkin

June 20, 1956-January 20, 2014

Brendan Seamus Clerkin died at his home in Newburgh on Jan. 20. He was 57, and a former resident of Cornwall.

The son of Owen and Sarah McGorman Clerkin, he was born in Newburgh on June 20, 1956. He was a substance abuse counselor with Renwick Recovery in Newburgh.

“Brendan was a great, loving father and brother,” his family said, “who’s dry sense of humor will be greatly missed.”

Survivors include his former wife Shari E. Clerkin; his son Ian Clerkin; his daughters Eileen and Allison Clerkin, all of Cornwall; his sisters Teresa Doogan and husband Frank of New Windsor, Eileen Nolan and husband Jerry of Ocala, Fla.; his brothers Gene Clerkin and his wife Donna of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and Kevin Clerkin and his wife Anne of Whitney Point, N.Y.; also many nephews, nieces and cousins.

The family was due to receive visitors on Thursday, Jan. 23 at Quigley Brothers Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 24 at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church, 340 Hudson Street, Cornwall-on-Hudson.

Kathleen Dunphy

May 29, 1926-January 18, 2014

Kathleen Dunphy, 87 years, of Cornwall passed away peacefully surrounded by her family  on Jan. 18 at St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh.

Kathleen was born May 29, 1926 in Carrick-on-Suir, County Tipperary, Ireland to John O’Sullivan and Bridget Walsh O’Sullivan.

She is survived by her children: Mary Dunphy  Clifford of New Windsor, NY, John Dunphy and his wife, Bonnie of Town of Newburgh, Kathy Dunphy Smith and husband, Gary of Cape Coral, FL, and Noreen Dunphy Marino of New Windsor; her sister, Noreen O’Mahoney; brother, “Willie”  O’Sullivan, both of Ireland; grandchildren: John Pierce, Jeffrey Clifford, Jason Smith, Sharon Lynn, Christina Bandura, Anthony Smith, Brad Clifford, Richard Marino, Dominica Marino; several nieces, nephews and great grandchildren. She also survived by her long time companion, Frank Jones who worked  side by side with her in later years.

Kathleen was predeceased by her loving husband, Richard, her parents and her brother, Paddy O’Sullivan.

Kathleen emigrated to the United States at age 19 and worked to become a citizen. She held several jobs before going to Anchorage Alaska where she married her long time love, Richard. They traveled the world with the U.S. Air Force and raised four children.

After retirement, they settled in Cornwall and purchased and operated the Maplehurst Inn. Kathleen continued to run it after his death in 1985.

She will be missed by her family and all the residents of the Inn.

The family received visitors on Jan. 20 at Quigley Brothers Funeral Home in Cornwall-on-Hudson,. A Mass was celebrated Jan. 21 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, in New Windsor, and was followed by burial in St. Thomas Cemetery in Cornwall.

William F. Hallas

April 2, 1938-January 17, 2014

William F. Hallas of New Windsor died at home on Jan. 17 at the age of 75. He was a retired police officer, having worked with the New York City Housing Authority Police in the Bronx.

The son of Frederick E. and Blodwen Daniels Hallas, he was born in the Bronx on April 2, 1938.

Survivors include his son William F. Hallas Jr. and his wife Anastasia of New Windsor; his stepdaughters Janet Jackson and Sherry Belfiore, both of Florida; and his grandchildren Grace, William and Matthew Hallas.

The family received visitors on Jan. 20 at Quigley Brothers Funeral Home in Cornwall-on-Hudson. A private funeral service was held at the funeral home on Jan. 21, and was followed by burial in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Newburgh.

Peter J. McManus

December 7, 1946-January 16, 2014

Peter J. McManus died on Jan. 16 at Orange Regional Medical Center in the Town of Wallkill. He was 67 and a resident of New Windsor.

The son of Bernard and Nora Harrigan McManus, he was born on Dec. 7, 1946 in the Bronx. He served proudly in the United States Navy from 1964 to 1967, and was retired after working as a results technician for Orange & Rockland Utilities in Haverstraw.

Survivors include his wife Dorothy DiGiugno McManus at home; his son Peter J. McManus Jr. and his wife Lori Ann of Washingtonville; his daughter Michelle M. McManus Losgar and her husband Philip of Orange Lake; his grandchildren Ashley McManus, Colin and Morghain Losgar; his brothers Bernard McManus and wife Juneann of Washington Township, N.J. and Daniel McManus and his wife Gail of Monroe; his sisters Noreen Ferrigno and husband Thomas of Selden, L.I. and Nancy Mazza and husband Salvatore of Maybrook.

The family did not receive visitors. A memorial Mass was held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in New Windsor on Jan. 23 with Father Dennis Dinan officiating.

Edith Roberts

June 24, 1927-January 16, 2014

Edith Roberts, 86, of Cote de Caza, Calif., passed away on Jan. 16 after a short illness. She was a former resident of Cornwall-on-Hudson.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, John A. Roberts, and by her children John A. Roberts Jr. (Jack) of Philadelphia and his wife Susan; Craig W. Roberts and his wife Debbie of Poway, Calif. and her daughter Sally Ann Palmer and her husband Keith of Cote de Caza, Calif.  Edith has five grandchildren: Elizabeth and Daniel Roberts; Katie Roberts; and Christopher and Colin Palmer.

The daughter of William and Katie Brown, she was born in Elizabeth, N.J. on June 24, 1927 and grew up in Linden, N.J. In 1964, she and her husband John moved from Cranford, N.J. to Cornwall-on-Hudson,

Services were held in California.She is also survived by two sisters, Helen Veverka of Apollo Beach, Fla. and Clare Miller of Little Egg Harbor, N.J.

Edith and her husband John were active, longtime members of Cornwall Presbyterian Church where they both served as elders. Edith especially enjoyed singing in the church choir with her close friends Marjorie Knight and Doris Taylor. She was also a teacher’s aide at Cornwall-on-Hudson Elementary School.  In 1981, they moved to Charleston, Ill. and later retired to Rancho Bernardo, Calif.

“Edith loved Cornwall and her many friends and neighbors there,” the family said.  “She looked forward to reading the news from the Cornwall Local every week no matter where she lived.”
