Ruth E. Dougan

March 10, 1920-November18, 2013

Ruth E. Dougan died at Moravian Manor in Lititz, Penn. on Nov. 18. She was 93, and a former resident of the Cornwall area.

The daughter of George B. and Nellie Brockelbank Dougan, she was born in Newburgh on March 10, 1920.

She graduated from Columbia University as a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and later earned a master’s degree from SUNY New Paltz. Before retiring, she was the the principal of the West Point Elementary School at the United States Military Academy.

Survivors include her niece Linda E. Jannarone and her husband Robert of Manheim, Penn. She was predeceased by her sisters Dorothy Henson and Jane Wooten.

Visitation was held at Quigley Brothers Funeral Home on Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 20. A funeral was held the following morning at the Cornwall Baptist Church on Main Street, and was followed by burial in Woodlawn Cemetery in New Windsor.

Thomas Halvorsen

April 30, 1931-November 10, 2013

Thomas Halvorsen of Cornwall entered into rest on Sunday, Nov. 10.  He was 82.

The son of the late George and Louise Smith Halvorsen, he was born on April 30, 1931 in Cornwall.

Thomas was a Veteran of the US Army, 7th Armored Division.  He was retired from IBM and a member of Highland Engine Company.  A sports enthusiast, Thomas was an avid bowler and a member of the Cornwall Merchants League.

Survivors include his loving wife Ada; sons Wayne and wife Evelyn; David and wife Vicki; Scott and companion Kathryn; and Kevin and wife Ginette; grandchildren: Bryan and wife Kelly, Christopher, Amanda, Kyle, Meaghan, Jackson, Wyatt and Molly; great-grandchildren: Emma and Ava; brothers George H. and wife Jean; and Robert H. and wife Joan.

The family received visitors on Friday, Nov. 15 at James F. Lulves Funeral Home, 9 Avenue A, Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY.  Funeral Services were held on Saturday, Nov. 16, at the funeral home.  Interment followed in Woodlawn Cemetery, New Windsor.

Isabella G. Jones

January 16, 1926-November 16, 2013

Isabella G. Jones of Salisbury Mills, formerly of Bloomfield, N.J., entered into Eternal rest on Saturday, Nov. 16.  She was 87.

The daughter of the late John and Christine Curry Greer, she was born on Jan. 16, 1926 in Montclair, N.J.

Isabella retired to Cornwall after a long career in banking.  She was an active member of the Cornwall Presbyterian Church.  She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend and will be deeply missed.

Survivors include her beloved husband Albert, at home; daughter Barbara Piascik and husband Joe; grandchildren: Albert and wife Kevyn, Joseph and wife Melody, Christine, John and fiancée Christie, and Luke; sister-in-law Alice Davis, and several nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her sister Christine Lynch.

Visitation was due to be held on Thursday, Nov. 21, from 7-9 p.m. at James F. Lulves Funeral Home, 9 Avenue A, Cornwall-on-Hudson.  Funeral services will be held on Friday, Nov. 22 at 10 a.m. at the Cornwall Presbyterian Church, 222 Hudson St., Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY. Interment is private and at the convenience of the family.

Raymond J. McGowan

Raymond J. McGowan, a long-time Cornwall resident, died on Nov. 14 in Ocala, Fla.

Mr. McGowan was a member of America’s Greatest Generation as a World War  II veteran.  A U.S. Navy Quartermaster First Class, he served in the Asiatic and North Atlantic Theaters and received the Philippines Presidential Unit Citation.

After the war, he returned to Cornwall to first join, then run Raymond J. McGowan and Sons, a commercial contract painting company in the Mid-Hudson Valley.

He was a long-time member of Storm King Golf Club, serving as president and winning the men’s club championship several times.  He and his wife received a life-time membership from the Club in 2008. Mr. McGowan was also an active member of the Cornwall Lions Club, serving in numerous officer positions.

He is survived by his wife Carol (Ocala, Fla), son Tim (Darien, Conn.), daughter-in-law Louise (Darien, Conn.), grandson Andrew, Ensign USN (Albany, N.Y.), granddaughter Sarah (New York City), sister Mary (Ft. Collins, Col.,) brother William (Ocala, Fla.), and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 11 a.m. at the Orange County Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Goshen.
