Art on display at Stewart Airport

CCSD artwork on display
The artwork of Cornwall Central School District students is on display in two locations at Stewart International Airport. The artwork will remain up until May.

For the next six months, artwork by Cornwall Central School District students will be on display inside Stewart International Airport.

Initially only artwork by students in the Newburgh Enlarged School District was on display, but the invitation was recently extended to the Washingtonville and Cornwall school districts. For the last six months, Washingtonville claimed the two wall spaces within the airport. Cornwall’s display was put up Tuesday.

Art teachers in each of the district’s five buildings selected the works of about 40 students ranging from kindergarten through 12th grade. The pieces are representative of curriculum projects done throughout the school year.

“I was surprised actually,” said middle school student Maya Arora when she learned one of her pieces was selected for the display. There’s another kid in our grade who I thought was better than me.”

Arora will have a purple flower, done in pastels, on display.

Art teacher Gina Dianis said the pieces will be on display in two locations – at baggage claim for people picking up luggage to see, and upstairs for those boarding flights. Because going through security would be required, parents will be able to visit the district website, cornwallschools.com, to view their child’s work. Photos of the display will go live on Friday.

“It’s cool my artwork gets to be in an airport,” said Coral Barrett, also a middle school student. “A lot of people go in and out of the airport.”

Barrett drew a bicycle in ink and was shocked when she learned it would be on display for six months.

Other media represented include acrylic and oil paint, printmaking, photography, pastels, and water colors.

Newburgh will be next in the rotation once Cornwall’s display comes down in May. Unless other school districts are invited to showcase their students’ artwork, Cornwall will have additional opportunities in May 2015 and November 2016.
