Sculpture brings year-round spring to garden

Hollie’s Garden is nestled next to the Littman Cancer Center in Cornwall. Named for the late Hollie Atzrott, it’s a place where patients can escape for a few moments and relax in a tranquil setting.

But even the lushest gardens lose their vitality in winter. So the hospital hosted a fund-raiser, and used the money from the event to engage Steve Cooper, a local metal smith.

A reception was held on Oct. 13 to introduce guests to Mr. Cooper’s creation. There were refreshments and brief speeches by CEO Allan Atzrott and Honora McCarthy of the Littman Center. Then the visitors were invited to stroll through the garden and admire the new addition.

If they were expecting a statue, they were surprised to see a man-made sun flower with cheerful yellow and orange petals. The structure, which is several feet high, is positioned near the entrance, so that even the most distracted visitor will see it.

Mrs. McCarthy of the Cancer Center was pleased with the addition. In a conversation, she said that Hollie’s legacy has outlived her. The center provides physical healing, but the garden provides spiritual comfort. “Now,” she said, “the garden will have life all year long.”
