Each year a committee selects the best floats in Cornwall’s Independence Day parade. This year the winning float belonged to Cub Scout Pack 6. Honorable mentions went to Edgwick Farm and the Cornwall Public Library.
The winning float depicted the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. The Scouts and leaders were dressed in period costumes representing both the Confederate and Union soldiers.
According to Paul Korykora, the parade’s coordinator for the last decade, the parade featured eight musical organizations or bands, the same as in previous years. Counting the trailers manned by the Cornwall High School sernior class and the drama club, there were 16 floats in the processional, which was more than in the past.
The increase in floats included a new entry from Edgwick Farm and another co-sponsored by 2 Alices Coffee Lounge and Painter’s Restaurant.
Korykora said there’s no limit to the number of floats that can appear in the parade.
“If an organization or group would like to put in a float all they have to do is call me, a week or two prior and let me know they’re interested in putting a float in the parade,” he said. “I’ll do my best to get them into the parade and tell them what street they’re starting on before the parade kicks off that day.”
Participants are encouraged to design a float depicting a historic scene or event in Cornwall or the nation’s history, but they’re not held to that.
