John A. Calabro

On July 9, our nation lost a truly great soldier-scholar. John A. Calabro Jr. of Cornwall-on-Hudson passed away suddenly and unexpectedly, while visiting family with his wife Angela in Anna Maria Island, Florida. He was 67. John was a colonel, United States Army; Ph.D.; and Senior Vice President & Chief Operating Officer of the West Point Association of Graduates.Born to John and Frances (Yonkauski) Calabro of Forest Hills, New York, on January 14, 1946, John graduated from Xavier High School in New York City and West Point. He served as an officer in Viet Nam, where he was decorated for valor. Soon thereafter he was selected to join the faculty of the United States Military Academy’s Department of English. He earned a master’s degree from Columbia University and a doctorate from the University of Virginia and became a full professor on the West Point faculty.
Following John’s retirement from the military, he joined the executive staff of the West Point Association of Graduates in 1998. His volunteer activities included leadership in the founding of the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor in New Windsor, New York, and service on the Putnam County Historical Board.
John is survived by his wife of 32 years Angela (Manali) Calabro; their son Tony; John’s son Jac, and his wife Elizabeth; grandchildren Joseph, Jake, and Jackson; John’s sisters Mary Calabro of Aiken, S.C., and Lori Berg of Yorktown Heights, N.Y.; and countless cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by family, friends and colleagues.

David Stanley Hess
December 16, 1956 – July 11, 2013
David Stanley Hess died on Thursday, July 11 at OHSU Hospital in Portland, Ore. after a long illness.
David was born to Myron Stanley Hess and Arlene Miller Hess on Dec. 16, 1956 in Lewisburg, Penn. and was raised in Mountainville, NY. He moved to Lake Oswego, Ore. in August of 2005 .
David was educated in the Cornwall Central School District. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1976 and became Airman First Class as a flight line mechanic at Elmendorf AFB in Alaska. He transferred in 1978 to the Air National Guard at Stewart AFB in Newburgh and served until 1986.
After leaving the Air National Guard, he served as a firefighter at Castle Point VA Hospital in NY, worked in security at the U.S. Mint at West Point, worked for several Auction Houses and had his own “Broom Swept” business in New York.
He loved to hunt, fish, and camp with family and friends and was a lifetime member of Black Rock Fish and Game Club in Mountainville.
Survivors include his wife, Hillary Cannock Hess of Lake Oswego; daughters: Laura Hess, 20 and Patricia Hess, 18, both of Lake Oswego; son, Ryan Hess, 14 of Lake Oswego; his mother, Arlene Miller Hess of Tigard, Ore.; brothers: Alan Zeiber of Portland, Ore., and Brent Morris of McCalla, Ala.; sister, Susan Hess of Tigard, Ore; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Myron Stanley Hess.
His funeral service with full Military Honors took place on July 16 at Willamette National Cemetery.

Ruth King Rupert
Died February 15, 2013
Ruth King Rupert died in Wilton Manors, Fla. on Feb. 15 at the age of 94.
The daughter of Thomas E. and Ann Darcy King, she was raised in Highland Falls. She married Everett D. Rupert, a member of the USMA Band, in 1936, at West Point. After military retirement in 1959, they moved to Cornwall-on-Hudson, where CWO Rupert was bandmaster at New York Military Academy until 1969. Their second retirement took them to Garden City, S.C.
Everett predeceased her in 1998. Ruth moved to Plantation, Fla. in 2001 to be near her daughter.
She is survived by her daughter, Karen R. Scharrett of Plantation, Fla.; granddaughter Darcy S. Yates and husband Roy and their two daughters Lauren and Claire, of Lighthouse Point, Fla.; grandson John (Jack) C. Scharrett, wife Kris and twins Jackson and Aria, of Edina, Minn.
A memorial Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Church in Highland Falls on Friday, July 26 at 8 a.m. Burial will be in Freysbush, NY.
