Lois L. Hennessey

March 20, 1925-May 22, 2013

Lois L. Hennessey passed away at St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh on May 22. She was 88 and a resident of Cornwall.

The daughter of David and Viola Gibson Taylor, she was born in Newburgh on March 20, 1925. Before retiring, she was an administrative secretary at the Storm King School. She was married to William D. Hennessey, who passed away in 1994.

Survivors included her children Stephen J. Hennessey, Lorraine M. Hennessey, Ruth E. Hennessey and Mark W. Hennessey; her grandson Maxwell W. Schoenfelder; and her son-in-law Kenneth H. Schoenfelder. She was predeceased by her brother James G. Taylor.

The family will receive visitors at Quigley Brothers Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday, May 31. The funeral service and burial will be private.

Alice M. Laganaro

September 27, 1927-May 20, 2013

Alice M. Laganaro of Newburgh, formerly of Cornwall-on-Hudson, departed this earth on Monday, May 20.  She was 85.

The daughter of the late Alfred and Verna Brewer Hosier, she was born on September 27, 1927 in Cornwall.

Alice was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, and she will be deeply missed by all.

Survivors include daughters: Mary Ann Pellow and husband James, Lucille Bohannon and husband Raymond; son: Samuel T. Laganaro and partner David; grandchildren: James Pellow, Sean Pellow and wife Meri, Dylan Bohannon and partner Karen Lynch; and great-grandchildren: Seamus and Padraig Pellow. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Samuel T. Laganaro.

Services are private and at the convenience of the family.

Donations in Alice’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice.

James B. Mahan

May 20, 1954-May 23, 2013

James B. Mahan of Monticello died on May 23 in the Catskill Region Medical Center in Harris, N.Y. He had just turned 59 and was a former resident of Cornwall.

The son of  James B. Mahan Sr. and Alma Gallagher Mahan, he was born in Cornwall on May 20, 1954. He was retired after serving as a sergeant in the Dept. of Corrections.

Survivors include his wife, Susan B. Strang Mahan, at home; his parents, who still reside in Cornwall; his daughter Katherine E. Mahan and her fiance Luke Hobaica of New Hartford, N.Y.; his brothers Mark Mahan of Cornwall and Brian Mahan and his wife Jennifer of Walden; his sister Monica Sullivan and her husband Richard of Fort Montgomery; his nephews and nieces; Sean, Holly, Timothy, Jacqueline, Amanda, Kelley, Marcy, Jennifer, Melissa, Kristy, Joshua, Thomas, Marshall; his father- and mother-in-law Gustav and Rose Strang of Monticello; his brothers–in-law; Michael Strang, John Strang (Judy) of Middleburg, Fla.; Peter Strang (April) of Monticello; his sisters-in-law Rose Comfort (Ron) and Barbara Ketcham (Evan) of Monticello; and his beloved dogs Buster Posada and Storm Pettitte.

The family received visitors on Tuesday, May 28 at Quigley Brothers Funeral Home. A funeral Mass was held at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church on May 29 and was followed by burial in St. Thomas Cemetery in Cornwall.

Louise L. Sawoska

May 7, 1937-May 24, 2013

Louise L. Sawoska died at Wingate at Beacon on May 24. She was 76 and a resident of New Windsor.

The daughter of Leander J. Forest and Lita Mary Melanson, she was born on May 7, 1937 in Cambridge, Mass. She was married to Henry J. Sawoska, and was retired after working as a teller for the Bank of New York in Newburgh.

“She will be dearly missed,” her family wrote, “and yet we know that if we can make even the smallest part of her spirit a part of us in our lives going forward, it will be the very best part.”

Survivors include her husband, at home; her son Joseph Sawoska and his wife Celia of Monroe; her daughters Mary Mock and her husband William of Walden, and Diana Sawoska of Sanford, N.C.; her brothers George Forest of Medford Mass. and Albert Forest and his wife Rovena of Visalia, Calif.; her sister Diana Azevedo of Medor, Mass.; her sister-in-law Gail Forest; and her grandchildren Daniel, Jacob and David Sawoska, Adriana and William Mock Jr. She was predeceased by her brother Gerald Forest.

The family received visitors at Quigley Brothers Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 29. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church on Thursday, May 30 and was followed by burial in St. Thomas Cemetery.
