State Police search for missing kayaker

State Police were still searching the Hudson River this afternoon for a missing kayaker.

Angelica Graswald and Vincent Viafore left Plum Point yesterday  for Bannerman’s Island. The return trip was rough. When their kayaks started to take in water, the man was thrown overboard. His companion called 911, and tried to help him. But in an effort to get him into the boat she toppled into the frigid water.

Ms. Graswald was the only one wearing a flotation device. She was able to return to her kayak, but he wasn’t. He was out of sight when a boat from the Cornwall Yacht Club responded to the distress call at 7:30

Rescuers took Ms. Graswald to St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital, where she was treated for hypothermia and released.

State Police, local marine patrols and fire departments continued the search until late Sunday night. A State Police boat returned to the scene on Monday morning — following the west shore of the Hudson from Cornwall to Newburgh.
