This year’s Main Street Mile produced the oldest and youngest winners in the race’s history.

Suzanne Laburt, age 52, won the women’s race, finishing a few steps ahead of Faith Briggs — who was a sprinter when she ran for Cornwall  more than 10 years ago.

Seth Bywater finished strong on the men’s side to pass Kris Krisamis, who was pushing a little girl in a three-wheel stroller. Seth, who gained the lead in the straightaway by Ring’s Pond, is a member of the high school track team. He just completed his freshman year.

It’s been a long time since Erika Abraham was a freshman. The 78-year-old runner was Cornwall’s busiest athlete of the day. In the morning, she ran the Firecracker 5K in Highland Falls and in the afternoon she did the Main Street Mile. In both events, she finished first in her age group.

Cornwall’s Tim Crill was third in a large field in Highland Falls. He returned to his home town for the Fourth of July festivities, but opted to enjoy the race as a spectator.

The 18th running of the Main Street Mile drew 151 participants. The men started from in front of the hospital at 4:30 p.m. The women took off five minutes later. Some of the faster women got to the finish line near the library ahead of some of the slower men.

The Cuffe sisters, who won seven of the last eight miles, were both far away. Aisling was in Oregon, hoping to gain a berth in the Olympic Trials, and Dara was in Ireland. As in the past, varsity track coach Dave Feuer served as the race director.
