Soccer stars commit to play in college

They haven’t signed a letter of intent yet. That won’t happen until February. But Chrissy Cannella, Sam Nelbach and Lauren Pinkham have verbally agreed to play for Division I colleges.

Chrissy, who missed her senior year with injuries, will represent the University of Hartford. Sam, who led the Dragons in scoring as a sophomore and senior, will be playing for Providence. Lauren, a Section IX All Star on defense, is heading to Stony Brook.

The Athletic Department hosted a reception for the girls and their families on Nov. 10. Coach Amanda Greenblatt, and several school administrators, attended the event to congratulate the athletes.

Cross country runner had unusual conflict

Sometimes you pay a price for being good at more than one thing. Hannah Mellino won a medal for finishing 13th in the New York State Class B cross country race. She also earned a berth in the Federation meet that was held on Nov. 21.

But that’s where the conflict occurred. The 11th-grader also qualified for the New York Area All-State Band, which had a concert on the same day. Hannah elected to play the clarinet on the 21st, and leave the running to her teammate Victoria Caroli.

Dave Brubacher, a senior, earned a medal at the state meet for finishing 17th.

Girls soccer program gives McGinnis Awards

Coaches presented three Glen McGinnis Awards at the Nov. 20 soccer banquet at the high school. During his long association with Cornwall sports, Mr. McGinnis coached modified girls soccer for several years. The awards went to players who showed determination and supported their teammates on and off the field.. The winners were Chrissy Cannella (varsity), Reese Smyth (junior varsity) and Brooke Zimmer (modified team).

Three compete during final fall weekend

Samantha Reichman was second among Section IX divers at the state championships in Ithaca. The Cornwall senior was 24th overall. Her teammate Julia Brice was 39th; she was one of only eight freshmen in the state to qualify for the event.

Victoria Caroli was 93rd out of 255 runners in the New York State Federation Meet at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls.
