Wendell M. Brooks

December 10, 1940-August 12, 2014

Wendell M. Brooks, of Cornwall-On-Hudson entered into eternal rest on Aug. 12 at home. He was 73.

The son of Donald Clarence Brooks and Elizabeth Louise Stevens, he was born on Dec. 10, 1940 in Warsaw, N.Y.

Wendell grew up in Pavilion, N.Y., and graduated from SUNY Geneseo with a bachelor’s degree in speech pathology. He continued his education at Queens College, receiving a masters degree. He began teaching in East Islip, N.Y. and completed over 30 years of dedicated public school service, retiring from the Monroe-Woodbury Central School District in 1998. In retirement, Wendell conducted speech screenings for the Little Lambs Nursery School and English Rose School in Washingtonville. He was an Adjunct Professor with SUNY New Paltz and William Patterson College. A life-long learner as well as a teacher, he worked toward a doctorate at Hunter College.

Wendell served on the Cornwall Board of Education for 13 years, including a stint as president. He was an active member of the Cornwall Lion’s Club, Cornwall, New Windsor & Monroe Horse Thieves Detecting Society, Founding member of the Jaycees, Mid-Hudson Valley Corvette Association, Storm King Golf Club and the American Speech Language-Hearing Association .

His family called him a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. “He will forever be in our hearts and prayers,” they said.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Dorothy Gail Zipperian Brooks at home, his son, Michael Mackenzie Brooks and wife Judith and grandchildren MacKenzie Marie and Emily Grace of Washingtonville. A brother Donald Brooks of Pavilion, N.Y. Also many relatives, friends, and extended family.

The family received visitors on Aug. 15 at Quigley Brothers Funeral Home in Cornwall-on-Hudson . A funeral Service was held on Aug. 16  at the funeral home.

Derrick N. Lindstrom

October 23, 1962 – August 14, 2014

Derrick N. Lindstrom, of Cornwall-On-Hudson passed away on Aug. 14 at Westchester County Medical Center in Valhalla, NY. He was 51-years-old.

The son of Robert Lindstrom and Patricia Ryan, Derrick was born on Oct. 23, 1962 in Mount Kisco, N.Y.

A graduate of Washingtonville Senior High School, Derrick was a union carpenter and member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Local 279.

He was a loving and devoted father, a hard working and kind man who will be forever missed.

Derrick leaves behind his daughter Arielle, son Noah, and former wife Maria Lindstrom of Cornwall-on-Hudson; brother Thomas Lindstrom of South Dakota, and parents Robert and Maria Lindstrom of South Carolina. He is survived by many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews and by dear friends Jack, Eddie, and Jason who were of tremendous support in his final days.

The family received visitors on Aug. 20 at Quigley Brothers Funeral Home in Cornwall-on-Hudson.

Kyle James Moynihan

December 26, 1989 -August 14, 2014

Kyle James Moynihan , of Riveer Edge, N.J., formerly of Cornwall, entered into eternal rest on Aug. 14, at home. He was 24-years-old.

The son of Robert Moynihan  and Linda Aguilar Moynihan, Kyle was born on Dec. 26, 1989, in Belleville, N.J.

Kyle graduated from Cornwall Central School in 2008. He was a waiter at the Emerson Hotel in  Emerson, N.J.

Kyle is survived by his mother Linda Moynihan, of Cornwall-On-Hudson, his father Robert Moynihan, of Monroe, brother Brian Moynihan, of Cornwall-on-Hudson, Aunt Jane and William Murphy, of Congers, N.Y., and grand parents: Theresa Aguilar, of West Orange, N.J. and Gayle Moynihan, of River Edge, N.J.

The family received visitors on Aug. 19 at Quigley Brothers Funeral Home in Cornwall-on-Hudson. A funeral service was held on Aug. 20 at St. Thomas of Canterbury Church, Cornwall-on-Hudson. Burial followed the service in Calvary Cemetery in New Windsor.

Nancy E. Rooney

February 13, 1946 – August 15, 2014

Nancy E. Rooney, 68 of Lakeland, Fla., formerly of Cornwall, passed away peacefully on Aug. 15.

Born in Englewood N.J. on Feb. 13, 1946, Nancy moved to Cornwall with her family in 1974.

Working at Cornwall Central High School in 1986, she was  hired as the head swim coach for the swimming and diving team.  Nancy stayed on as the head coach until she retired in 2008.  The Cornwall Dragons won many titles during her tenure. She coached two state champions and was chosen as Varsity Swim Coach of the Year in 1989.

Nancy worked diligently with then Superintendent of Schools Margaret A. Dames, to ensure a pool was built in the new Cornwall High School. Nancy was named in Who’s Who in American Teachers in 2005. She received the NISCA Merit Award for Endless Effort and Contributions to Swimming in March 2009 along with a 25 year award for serving the Sport of Swimming at CCHS. For her service to swimming, CCHS grants to a specified swimmer the “ Nancy Rooney Swimming Award” to the most valuable swimmer each year at graduation.

Nancy is survived by her loving husband James Rooney,  of Lakeland, and children Scott Rooney, of Pompton Lakes, N.J. and Stacy Rooney, of Lakeland, and granddaughter Gabriella Isabella Francis, of Lakeland.

She was a participating member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, Lakeland .

The family received visitors on Aug. 20 at Gentry-Morrison Funeral Home at Serenity Gardens, Lakeland Fla.  a funeral service was held on Aug. 21.
